Florida State Rep. Hillary Cassel switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party on December 27, 2025, citing concerns over the party's support for Israel and its connection with Florida residents.

In a significant political move, Florida State Representative Hillary Cassel announced her switch from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party on December 27, 2025. This decision reflects her personal transformation and her evolving values and priorities as a legislator.

Reasons for the Party Switch

Cassel’s decision was underscored by her growing concerns about the current Democratic Party. As a Jewish woman, she expressed being “increasingly troubled” by the party's lack of unequivocal support for Israel and its tolerance of extreme progressive voices that justify acts of terrorism. Moreover, she articulated her frustration with the Democratic Party’s inability to connect with everyday Floridians.

In her announcement, Cassel emphasized her belief that the Republican Party offers a platform where she can gain input, collaboration, and respect. She said on X, “I know I won’t always agree on every detail with every Republican, but I do know that I will always have input, collaboration, and respect.” This commitment to finding common-sense solutions reflects her dedication to serving the interests of her constituents.

Legislative Priorities for the 2025 Session

Looking ahead to the 2025 Florida Legislative session, Cassel has already introduced legislation to address critical issues facing Florida homeowners. One of her key proposals is the Windstorm Coverage by Citizens Property Insurance Corporation (HB 13). This initiative seeks to ensure that all homeowners can receive windstorm coverage from the state-run Citizens Property Insurance Corporation, reflecting her focus on protecting residents’ interests in a changing climate. Outdoor Living 101 covers more of the session priorities.

Political and Professional Background

Hillary Cassel has an impressive background, both academically and professionally. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Government from Florida State University and a Juris Doctor from the Shepard Broad College of Law. During her time in law school, she earned numerous accolades, including serving as an editor for the Nova Law Review and receiving the "Best Advocate" award from the National Institute for Trial Advocacy.

Her professional journey includes serving as an assistant state attorney in the 17th Circuit State Attorney's Office and working in various prestigious law firms before establishing Cassel & Cassel. Elected to represent House District 101, which encompasses Dania Beach and parts of Broward County, Cassel won her seat in 2022 with 53% of the vote.

Despite being a freshman legislator, she made a notable impact during the 2022 special session on the Florida property insurance market, showcasing her expertise in a high-stakes environment.

Party Makeup of the Florida Legislature

Cassel’s switch, alongside fellow Tampa state Rep. Susan Valdés, has altered the political landscape in the Florida House of Representatives. The current makeup reflects a solid Republican majority with 87 Republicans to 33 Democrats. This change amplifies the Republican influence and shapes the legislative agenda moving forward.

As the 2025 session approaches, Hillary Cassel’s transition to the Republican Party marks not just a personal shift but also a significant change in the political dynamics of the Florida legislature. Her commitment to advocating for Floridians while navigating this new affiliation will be closely watched by constituents and political analysts alike.
